Frosted, Etched, Satin, Sandblasted – One Product, Many Names
Anyone shopping for glass privacy runs into a confusing pile of terms. Frosted glass film, etched glass film, satin film, sandblast film, opaque window film – in German you will also see Milchglasfolie, Satinierungsfolie and Ätzglasfolie. Almost always they mean the same thing: a translucent, matt-white adhesive film applied to your existing glass that gives it the appearance of acid-etched or sandblasted glass.
The difference is only in where the words come from. “Etched” and “satin” originally describe real glass treatments in which the surface is roughened chemically or mechanically – expensive, permanent, and impossible to change afterwards. “Frosted” is the everyday term, and Milchglas (“milk glass”) is what the same thing is called in German.
The film achieves the identical look for a fraction of the cost – and stays reversible. Once installed, you will not tell it apart from genuine etched glass.

Full Coverage, Banding or Your Logo
Most people know frosted film only in its full-coverage form – the whole pane goes milky, done. That is the simplest option, but rarely the best-looking one.
As a band at seated or eye height: the view from outside is interrupted while clear glass remains above and below. In offices with glass partitions this is the most common solution, because the space still reads as open and nobody is watched at their desk.
As a cut logo: we cut your company mark, a wordmark or an ornament from the satin film – either positive, as a matt motif on clear glass, or negative, as a clear motif within a frosted field. The second approach looks more refined and is a favourite for entrance doors.
Enhanced with digital printing: gradients, patterns, photographic motifs or a single graphic running across several panes. That turns plain privacy screening into a design element.
Safety marking on large glass surfaces can be handled the same way: German workplace regulations require full-height glass walls to be clearly visible – a frosted band satisfies that and looks far better than the usual stick-on dots.

The film is opaque to view but translucent to light. The room stays bright – unlike blinds or curtains, which you have to close and which darken the space.

Frequently Asked Questions About Frosted Glass Film
What is the difference between frosted, etched and satin glass film?
There is none – they are different names for the same product. “Frosted” is the everyday term, “satin” comes from the glass-finishing process of satinising, and “etched glass” from chemical acid etching. You will also see sandblast film, frost film or decorative glass film; in German the same product is sold as Milchglasfolie, Satinierungsfolie or Ätzglasfolie. In every case it is a translucent, matt-white adhesive film that gives existing glass the appearance of satinised or etched glass.
Does frosted film also provide privacy at night?
During the day, completely. At night the same applies as to genuine frosted glass: when it is bright inside and dark outside, silhouettes and movement show up as shadows. Recognisable detail stays hidden, but it is not total privacy with the lights on.
If that is the actual requirement, mirrored solar film is no answer either – its effect reverses after dark. For night-time privacy there is no way around a curtain, blind or shutter.
Does the film go on the inside or the outside of the glass?
As a rule, the inside. There it is protected from weather, UV and physical wear, and lasts considerably longer. Exterior application is possible where the pane cannot be reached from inside – in that case we use a film explicitly rated for outdoor use.
Can the film be removed without leaving residue?
Yes. The film is peeled off and any adhesive residue is taken off with a solvent – the glass is then exactly as it was. That is why frosted film is straightforward in rented premises, where replacing glazing would count as a structural alteration.
How long does frosted glass film last?
Applied inside and in normal use, many years. We work exclusively with brand-name films that do not yellow and do not lift at the edges. Cheap DIY-store material, which often clings with water rather than adhesive, behaves differently: it bubbles and turns yellow over time.
Can you cut my logo into the film?
Yes, and it is one of the most frequent requests. We cut your logo from the satin film either positive (a matt motif on clear glass) or negative (a clear motif within a frosted field). If you have print data or a brand manual we follow it exactly; otherwise we design from your logo and agree the draft with you first.
Will the film fog up or grow mould in a bathroom?
No. The film is rated for damp rooms and bonds flat across the whole pane, so there is no cavity where moisture could collect. Condensation forms on the film exactly as it does on bare glass and wipes off the same way.
Is frosted film suitable as a safety marking on glass walls?
Yes. German workplace regulations require large, uninterrupted glass surfaces to be clearly recognisable so that nobody walks into them. A frosted band at eye height meets that requirement and looks considerably better than the usual stick-on dots or tape.
